The infinite set of coupled ordinary differential equations over radius that govern the infinitesimal free elastic-gravitational oscillations of a rotating, slightly elliptical earth with an isotropic perfectly elastic constitutive relation and a hydrostatic prestress field is derived. It is shown how the symmetries of such a body restrict the most general form of displacement eigenfunctions. Elastic-gravitational normal modes of a rotating, slightly elliptical earth that consist principally of translational motion of the solid inner core are numerically studied. The eigenfrequencies of these modes are shown to be sensitive to rotation, compressibility, outer-core stratification, and the density jump at the inner-core-outer-core boundary. Normal mode excitation theory is used to estimate the amplitude of inner-core translational motion excited by large earthquakes. Damping by both shear viscosity and compressional anelasticity is discussed. It is shown how to estimate these effects and numerical results are given.
