It is pointed out that important observations of X-ray sources and searches for the optical counterparts of X-ray and radio pulsars require a capability of detecting and analyzing light variations with a time scale of milliseconds. The approaches used for the recording and the reduction of high speed photometric observations are considered, giving attention to recording on audio tape at the telescope, the conversion of the audio tape to a digital tape, and a computer analysis.
