Nonthermal radiative emission with only smooth variations of the optical and radio spectral indices is a characteristic feature of extragalactic jets. It only can be explained by some kind of in situ acceleration along the jets. The dissipation of magnetic fields caused by inertia driven magnetic reconnection is a promising candidate for the reacceleration mechanism between the bright knots of the jets.
