Very Long Baseline Interferometry polarisation observations can provide information about the magnetic field structures of parsec-scale jets in active galactic nuclei (AGN). Evidence for the presence of turbulence and shocks in VLBI jets is summarised. Recent observations that may significantly affect our understanding of the nature of the transverse magnetic fields observed in some VLBI jets are discussed; in particular, the question of toroidal (helical) magnetic fields on parsec scales is considered. Available measurements connected with the plasma surrounding the VLBI jets and possible interactions between the jets and surrounding medium are discussed. One intriguing possibility in this connection is that at least some rapid (intraday) variability in AGN is associated with interactions between jets and the inhomogeneous environments through which they propagate.
