The theory of diffusive shock acceleration theory is reviewed. A brief introduction to the effects of accelerated particles on the shock structure follows a more involved test-particle description, where it is emphasized that dynamical modeling of the turbulence around the shock is crucial for a correct picture of particle acceleration at finite-Mach-number shocks. We focus on analytical theories, but references to some numerical simulations are given, as well.
