In fluctuating plasma, the distance between two adjacent field lines may grow exponentially with distance along the field lines. We investigate which circumstances lead to such a separation of field lines. Using magnetic field measurements onboard Ulysses, we determine the separation rate in the polar regions of the Heliosphere. The effect of field line mixing on charged particle transport, including the diffusion of particles, perpendicular to the field is highlighted.
