Details regarding the current theory of star formation are critically examined, taking into account models of gas cloud collapse, new observational evidence concerning the presence of molecular species in space, and the detection of compact sources with the aid of infrared astronomy. Questions regarding the nature of a collapse under gravity are discussed. Attention is given to Bok globules, molecular clouds, and infrared objects.
