True period changes of Her X-1 are considered, giving attention to two models involving accreting neutron stars in binary star systems. The possibility is explored that the change in the pulse period is due to both a true monotonic period decrease and an apparent pulse period change superposed on it due to the orbital dynamics of the system. Proof of the existence of a third star in Her X-1 would have a bearing on the nature of the compact X-ray emitting star.
