The emission line object MWC 349 has been found to show a high degree of polarization, the wavelength dependence of which is similar to that of VY Canis Majoris and of some Be stars and red variables but different from the normal wavelength dependence of interstellar polarization. Two possible interpretations of the high degree of linear polarization are considered - namely, multiple scattering of light from the bright star in a flattened circumstellar dust cloud, and a small bright asymmetric reflection nebula.
