Scientific paper

Late developments in X-ray astronomy and its correlation with optical astronomy are reviewed. The binary systems Vela X-1 (supergiant + massive neutron star) and Cygnus X-1 (giant + black hole), are discussed along with Scorpius X-1 and Centaurus X-3 as examples of 200 celestial X-ray sources now detected, 30 of them identified optically, and representing a varied array of stellar objects. The currently orbiting SAS-3 X-ray observation satellite, the HEAO-B high-energy X-ray observatory (launch scheduled 1978), and the LST (large space telescope, in Space Shuttle program, for concurrent optical observations, launch scheduled circa 1980) are discussed in relation to their possible contributions to X-ray and optical astronomy.
