The current status of our knowledge of the origin of the primary component of cosmic radiation observed at the earth surface is reviewed, with particular reference to diffusion-type galactic models that are used to study problems concerning the electron component and chemical composition of cosmic rays and the galactic synchrotron radiation. It is seen that diffusion-type galactic models with an extended gaseous halo above the galactic disk, for which the characteristic age of cosmic rays is 100 million years, are in agreement with radio data and are, at least, not at variance with data on the chemical composition of cosmic rays. Among the topics examined are cosmic ray origin theories, the propagation of the nuclear and electron components of cosmic rays, the propagation of cosmic rays in the Galaxy and in interstellar magnetic fields, and the applicability of gamma-astronomy to cosmic rays.
