The (14,0) band of the CO fourth positive system was shown to scatter the solar Lyman alpha emission line. This phenomenon is used to interpret planetary dayglows in the vacuum ultraviolet; a detailed calculation of the fluorescence spectrum due to this absorption process was made. It is shown that most of the energy is emitted between 1300 and 1500A. A detailed calculation of the absorption of the oxygen 1302A emission line by the (9,0) band was also included and it is shown that this process is almost negligible compared to the Lyman alpha scattering at high column densities.
