Recent research on the zodiacal light is reviewed from the viewpoint of measurements of the light, methods, and interpretation of observations. Techniques are described for separating the components of the night-sky light due to starlight, zodiacal light, and airglow in photometric data, and brief consideration is given to effects of atmospheric scattering, observations of the F corona, and space observations of the visible zodiacal light. Ground-based observations of the zodiacal light are discussed in detail with emphasis on the intensity of the light along and outside the ecliptic, the Gegenschein, polarization of the light, analysis of its line spectrum and color, thermal emission in the light, the question of symmetry, variations in the light, and changes with heliocentric distance. Methods for interpreting zodiacal-light observations are outlined along with mathematical models based on Mie theory, approximate scattering functions, and empirical scattering functions. The observational results are used in examining possible models for the relative spatial distribution, size distribution, spatial density, materials, dynamics, and origin of the zodiacal cloud.
