Arithmetical calculations of time dilatation effects, of differences in time experienced by a space traveler moving at relativistic speeds and time experienced by an earth-bound observer, are aided by diagrams. The article also discusses general data on major constituents of the Galaxy, the visible and radio windows and what has been learned through them, distance calculations by parallax or spectroscopy, and prospective use of other spectral intervals (UV, IR, X-rays, gamma-rays) in extraterrestrial studies of the Galaxy.
