The current state of balloon technology is described and the role which balloons can play in astronomical research is considered. Particular attention is paid to the field of X-ray astronomy and it is shown that the opportunities offered by balloons have not yet been fully exploited. With properly designed detectors, a number of measurements from balloons would be superior to those at present possible from artificial satellites.
