The combined effect of neutrino losses and of the detailed network of nuclear reactions on the evolution of low-mass, carbon-rich stars is investigated. It is found that models with masses between 0.93 and 0.95 solar masses ignite in a shell which rapidly extends toward the center. For models with masses between 0.95 and 1.25 solar masses, carbon burning takes place directly in the central region. For both ranges of mass, central combustion is followed by a phase of combustion in an outward-moving shell. For the lower-mass range, the end of evolution is marked by a violent flash; none is observed in the higher-mass models which then evolve toward a red giant configuration.
