From observations of linear polarization at the 10-micron 'silicate' feature, such as reported for the Becklin-Neugebauer source, constraints may be placed not only on the shape and degree of alignment of the interstellar grains but also on the 10-micron band strength of the grain material itself. Preliminary analysis of the available data suggests that the band strength may be smaller than the value usually assumed for interstellar silicates by a factor 2 or 3; this would provide another clue to the origin of the grains. Independent knowledge of the band strength is also important for predicting the accompanying near-infrared and optical extinction, both of which are needed in interpreting the nature of the infrared sources.
