I present the problem of how to characterize the statistical properties of the large scale distribution as traced by the galaxy point distribution. The method of N-order correlation functions and counts-in-cells are presented and discussed. We present a new model to describe the clustering and compare it with the Mayer cluster expansion for two-body potentials. This comparison results in a full statistical description for the matter distribution. This model yields a quasi-Poisson probability distribution function, which gives a reasonable match to data in galaxy catalogues.
