The thermally-connected graphitic islands which make up amorphous carbons are examined. The temperature excursions resulting from the absorption of UV and IR photons by amorphous carbon grains are estimated. The effectiveness of absorption in limiting the growth of molecular mantles on the grains is discussed. The model is used to interpret evidence concerning the desorption of CO from grains in the dark-cloud environment.
