It is shown that the use of available radiosonde, rocketsonde, and satellite data has clarified the climatology of the atmosphere up to the mesopause. Emphasis is placed on the effects of the planetary waves of the troposphere which penetrate into the stratosphere and even into the mesosphere, except during summer; these waves create longitudinal differences which should be treated in future model atmospheres. Attention was also given to hemispheric differences which in winter have their origin in variations of the general circulation of the troposphere. Finally the interannual variability and possible variations within the solar cycle are described.
