Mariner 9 high-resolution photographs of Martian volcanic features are presented and discussed, and basic data regarding major shield volcanoes on Mars are summarized, including drawings of their profiles (if known). The general features of three major volcanic regions, the Tharsis and Elysium regions and the Alba Patera, are described. The characteristics of Martian volcanoes are discussed in comparison with those of terrestrial ones, especially those in Hawaii.
