A basic portion of the solar magnetic flux is concentrated in so-called magnetic ropes which are a cylindrical symmetrical magnetohydrodynamic configuration which occupies a finite toroidal region. A thermodynamic equation is presented for describing an isolated magnetic rope. Conditions of rope equilibrium and for the chemical potential of the 'magnetic phase' in the rope for the longitudinal and azimuthal components of the field are obtained. It is shown that the longitudinal component of the magnetic field of the rope does not depend on the dimensions of the rope, while the azimuthal component is the smaller, the thinner and longer the rope.
