An examination of secularly-smoothed sunspot number data shows that the magnitude and time of occurrence of a solar maximum are determined one half-cycle earlier by conditions prevailing at the preceding solar minimum epoch. There is evidence, too, for a progressive increase in response of the magnitude of the maximum to that of the minimum over the last 21 solar cycles.
