Results are presented from the characterization of sets of micrometeorites obtained in Greenland in 1984 and Antarctica in 1988. About 30 percent of the samples consists of unmelted micrometeorites less than 1 mm in diameter. Electron microscope observations show that a significant fraction of these unmelted meteorites is made up of porous aggregates of very fine crystal grains in an amorphous matrix rich with a pyrolyzable carbon-rich composition. The results are used to construct a model for the heating of micrometeorites in the earth's atmosphere. Also, consideration is given to the possible role of micrometeorites in the transmission of organic matter to the prebiotic earth.
