A computer model was developed to study the possible evolution of a hypothetical self-sustaining ecosystem on Mars. In the model, a simple competitive growth of different colored daisies regulates the planetary climate at a level comfortable for daisies. The model was subjected to a wide-range heat input that might occur during the normal evolution of a main-sequence star. The results suggest that sparse life existing in a few small regions could not survive to control a planet. It is concluded that the process of terraforming a planet would require extensive planetary engineering including temperature control and supplying water and nutrients.
