The magnetic dipole moment of Mercury can be explained on the basis of thermoremanent magnetization acquired by an outer shell in an ancient Mercurian field produced by an internal dipole source such as a core dynamo which is now inactive. Such a shell will give rise to a dipole moment provided that there are differences of permeability between the shell and the interior, or the shell and free space. By assuming that the magnetic properties of the surface rocks of Mercury are similar to those of the moon it is shown that ancient fields of the order of 1 gauss and free iron concentrations of the order of a few percent are sufficient to produce the present dipole moment.
