The fact that the effective temperature and the gravity of the central star do not change is thought to indicate that the light variation must indeed have something to do with dust grains. This agrees with the infrared observations of Smyth et al. (1979), who showed that HR 5999 has an infrared excess, which at the K passband (2.2 microns) is about 2m.
