Various authors have developed theoretical models to solve the radiative transfer equation in dust clouds surrounding a central star. Recently, Orofino et al. (1987) have proposed a simplified model that allows to compute the flux from circumstellar envelopes around carbon stars. In the present work the authors check the reliability of the model comparing its results with those obtained using the more general elaboration of Leung (1975). In particular they find that both the classical scattering by dust and the "back-heating" effects are negligible in the radiative transfer when envelopes similar to IRC +10216 are taken into consideration.
