Formulas that are valid in the small-particle limit are used to calculate extinction and scattering efficiencies of spherical graphite grains represented by a superposition of concentric spherical layers of hexagonal graphite rings. The resulting extinction curve in the Rayleigh approximation for such spherically stratified grains is compared with that for plane-stratified grains, and the ratio of the albedos in both models is determined. It is shown that the extinction curve of the spherically stratified model peaks at an UV wavelength of 4.8 to 5 per micron, while the albedo in this model is higher than that in the plane-stratified one by a factor of 1.5 to 2 in the far UV. Extinction curves are also obtained for the case of a dielectric sphere surrounded by a thin graphite film.
