The neutrino radiation pressure on a shock wave during stellar collapse is evaluated. This radiation pressure is due to a large change in the neutrino index of refraction induced by a density change of order unity across the shock. The analysis shows that at high densities (of the order of 10 to the 13th power g/cu cm), the neutrino radiation pressure is very large as a result of coherent scattering. Implications of this large pressure are briefly discussed, particularly in regard to the possible origin of supernovae.
