Flare stars within a distance of less than 20 parsec from the sun are considered. Attention is given to methods of observation, the temporal distribution of flares, the activity of flare stars, the BY Draconis syndrome, and questions concerning the relation between flare activity and stellar age. It is found that the majority of flare stars belong to binaries or multiple stars. The duration of flare activity of a star within its evolution is a monotonic increasing function of the absolute brightness.
