Models for transient X-ray sources are reviewed from the standpoint that such sources are objects within the Galaxy and are, for the most part, similar to the known compact galactic X-ray sources. Standard models for the compact galactic sources are briefly discussed, possible mechanisms for the irregular variation of known nontransient sources are considered, and explanations for the periodicities of the transient sources A1118-61 and A0535+26 are examined. These explanations include rotation of a white dwarf or neutron star, gravitational radiation from a very close binary system containing a compact object, free precession of a rapidly rotating neutron star, and a magnetic-activity cycle in the outer convection zone of a white dwarf.
