It is proposed that the optical luminosity of T Tau-type stars is suppressed by the same mechanism that is responsible for the appearance of dark sunspots; in the presence of a strong magnetic field, convective-motion energy is partially transformed into hydromagnetic-wave energy and escapes from the photosphere. As the magnetic-field-convection interaction is threshold in nature, a decrease of the field below a critical value leads to conditions necessary for normal convection, and the star's luminosity fits the total power of the inner energy source. This process is proposed to be responsible for FU Ori flares. The expected magnetic fields of T Tau-type stars are estimated to be of order of several kilogauss.
