Homogeneous cosmological models which contain circularly polarized gravitational waves, matter vortex motions, or both, are considered, particularly the Bianchi type VII models. The appropriate type VII models are constructed in the 'flat' and 'open' Friedmann frameworks, particle motion at the leading edge of a standing gravitational wave in the flat model is discussed, and the physical meaning of the flat metric is elucidated. The propagation of traveling gravitational waves in the open model is examined, and solutions are obtained for both 'convergent' and 'divergent' traveling waves. The results show that only plane standing waves exist in the flat model, traveling waves may exist in the open model, the propagation velocity of a traveling wave is exactly equal to the velocity of light, the 'phase velocity' of a standing wave at its nonlinear stage of development approaches infinity as time tends toward zero, and vortex motions of ultrarelativistic matter can generate certain kinds of gravitational waves.
