The quasi-stellar object AO 0235+16.4 exhibited a rise in flux density at 2.7 GHz between May 5 and June 8, 1976. Upper and lower limits on the angular diameter of the source region are obtained from one of the object's absorption redshift systems and the absence of interstellar scintillation at 2.7 GHz. From an analysis of the results, it is concluded that AO 0235+16.4 shows apparent expansion velocities exceeding the velocity of light.
