The current state of the question regarding the origin and universal distribution of the elements is summarized. Uncertainties regarding the universal abundances of certain elements, in particular, helium and deuterium, are pointed out. The essential notions of neutron capture and the fast and slow processes are explained. A scheme for the big bang is examined, and its limitations in explaining all the current data on abundances are discussed.
