A low-level, high dynamic range search for megaparsec-scale associated structure has been carried out in the surrounding fields of 23 strong extragalactic radio sources using the Effelsberg 100 m telescope. Results are presented on a subset of the sample, namely those five sources having a 'D2' radio structure on the scale of seconds of arc according to Miley's classification. The results (for all 23 sources) show (1) that the background source count level averaged over all 23 fields is not significantly different from general source count statistics down to about 15 mJy; (2) that four of the five 'D2' sources having arcsec scale jets or satellite components have possibly associated outer structure close to the direction of the jet axis. If these statistically suggested associations are confirmed, these 'D2' quasars represent the active, or re-activated cores of very old radio sources which are the largest known systems in the universe. 3C 345 in particular has an implied projected size of about 24 Mpc, which would make it the largest known object.
