The tidal field is computed for the case where the larger group and its surroundings are modelled by an inhomogeneous Tolman-Bondi spherically symmetric dust (SSD) cosmological model. The tidal tensor (TT) in the Newtonian limit for any SSD system is considered, as is the TT for a spherical dust system in general relativity. In addition, tidal mass is defined via TT = angular factors x G x tidal mass/(r cubed). It is shown that tidal mass is not conserved and its evolution must be followed in order to perform calculations of tidal interactions in an expanding universe.
