Ways of identifying galaxies in various early stages of evolution are considered. Model predictions of what young galaxies at large redshifts might look like when they attain maximum luminosity are discussed, and it is suggested that some quasars may be primieval galaxies. Some examples of young galaxies at smaller redshifts are examined along with evidence of active star formation in the systems; the examples include the elliptical galaxies NGC 5253, NGC 185, NGC 3077, NGC 5128, and NGC 1275. Circumstantial evidence is reviewed for an external origin of the gas in various young spirals and ellipticals. It is noted that many peculiar galaxies possess highly distorted appearances and prominent young stellar populations which suggest that they are of recent origin or have recently acquired new material. The peculiar galaxy M82 is described in detail as an example of this category.
