Irregularities in the rotation of the earth are studied by applying the fast Fourier transform to International Time Service data over the past 20 years. The basic function studied is y(t) = TU1 - TAI, taken every ten days, so that the annual series contains 36-37 ordinates. The smoothing operator was used with annual and biannual averaging periods. The existence of a biannual wave was not discovered. A wave with 6-month period was found to exist and not be due to mathematical method. An annual wave is also detected, but all other harmonics are due to the mathematical processing technique and have no physical meaning. The need for careful examination of the system of meteorological corrections to universal time to aid in the detection of irregularities in the earth's rotation is pointed out. Astronomical observations should be carried out in such a manner that from them one can derive and eliminate the effect of stellar coordinate errors.
