A new method for determining reddening laws for the nearest extragalactic systems is presented. The distribution function of interstellar reddenings Q(E) obtained from data which are statistically complete to a certain absolute magnitude and distribution functions N(E) obtained from data complete to a certain apparent magnitude (U, B, or V) are clearly different. It is shown that these differences depend exclusively on the easily observable luminosity function and the reddening law. It should be possible to derive the reddening law from Q(E) and N(E).
