The paper examines energy requirements associated with the flow of plasma along magnetic arches threading the corona. The maintenance of flow due to pressure differences between the ends relies on continued evaporation at one foot in response to conduction of heat from the corona; a study of heat flow against the plasma stream provides quantitative information on the thickness of the chromosphere-corona transition region. The arches composed of sheared magnetic flux are examined, noting that the maintenance of dense current-sheets within the corona is necessary if the relaxation of the structures is not to proceed rapidly with considerable release of energy. Finally, it is suggested that brightenings of X-ray Bright Points and other Emerging Flux Regions may be due to 'thermal' events produced at this stage.
