Progress and future prospects in understanding the processes occuring in the earth's atmosphere by studying the atmospheres of other planets are discussed. The combined methods of planetary probes and earth-based observations are shown to be effective ways to obtain information on fundamental atmospheric phenomena. The discussion covers some observational and theoretical data on the thermal structure of Martian, Jovian, and Venusian atmospheres, relationships between thermal and dynamic processes on Jupiter, and planetary winds on Venus. Attention is also given to the cloud and chemical structure of these planetary atmospheres.
