Thermal relaxation in young stars is discussed, showing how luminosity jumps occur in those of sufficient mass. The essential character of the thermal relaxation process is shown to be internal heat transfer accompanied by nonhomologous contraction. A simple model of this heat transfer is used, in conjunction with a series of stellar atmospheric calculations, to provide a crude determination of the luminosity jump in a five solar mass star. The observational relevance of this phenomenon is discussed.
