The performance of optical imaging systems is limited by the signal-to-noise ratios and statistical characteristics of the imaging channel according to O'Neill (1963). In this context, a statistical model for astronomical images is defined and its Shannon information content evaluated in terms of the imaging parameters and the object and noise statistics.
