Improved limits are presented on the ratio of the column density of carbon monoxide to that of neutral hydrogen in the high neutral hydrogen column density damped Lyman alpha absorption systems toward the QSOs PHL 957 and MC 1131 + 170. The ratio is more than two orders of magnitude lower than that found in diffuse clouds in the interstellar medium of the Galaxy.
