A detailed analysis of the homogeneous dynamics of the Chapman-Ferraro model of the surface of the magnetosphere has failed to uncover a mechanism capable of amplifying initially small disturbances to the point where non-linear effects become important. Disturbances are shown to convect rapidly over the surface of the magnetosphere, blown along by the tangential component of the solar wind. As they convect, the magnetic field acts to disperse them and reduce their gradients. The effect of surface curvature is to further reduce the disturbance everywhere except in the polar dimples where some amplification results. However, the disturbances are blown out of the dimples so rapidly that amplification does not exceed 1.25. Present address: Bellcomm. Inc., Washington D.C.
