During the metasomatic development of Fe-Mg hornfelses (and possibly Ca hornfelses) from basic hornblende hornfelses, Cu was depleted. The mobilized Cu may now reside in associated cupiferous lodes. Distribution of Cu in basic igneous rocks (new average 115 ppm) and ortho-amphibolites (new average 107 ppm) is surveyed and compared. The greater range of Cu content in ortho-amphibolites reflects variable, localized mobility during metamorphism.
