An evaluation is made of recent results for the gas-phase oxygen
abundance of spiral galaxies in order to investigate the relationship
between the characteristic abundance of a galaxy and its mass and Hubble
type. Conjectures are presented concerning what these relationships may
imply for the origin of galaxy morphology.
