The radial velocities of R Leo were measured using spectrograms with a dispersion of 13.5 A/mm and more than 400 lines in the visual region. The line distributions and average excitation potential of lines over the observed velocities are in agreement with a two-shock model of the star's atmosphere near maximum. The observed velocities are compared with earlier observations of R Leo, suggesting that an unusual outburst of OH 1665 MHz emission preceded the increase of pulsation activity at the beginning of 1980.
